Locked keys in the car

Most car lockouts are opened with wedges and long-reach tools that work through the door seal without harming the paint or the glass. The locksmith will check that you own or are authorized to use the vehicle, usually with ID and the registration once the car is open.

If a child or a pet is inside on a warm day, call 911 first. Emergency services can act faster than anyone else in that situation.

  • Sedans and hatchbacks
  • Pickup trucks and vans
  • Trunk lockouts
  • Motorcycle and scooter locks

Cell 3 — Vehicles

Lost and replacement car keys

Modern keys usually contain a transponder chip that the car must recognize before it will start. A replacement key is cut to the lock and then programmed to the vehicle. The cost depends on the make, the model year and whether it is a plain key, a chip key or a remote fob.

Have the year, make and model ready, and the VIN if you can see it through the windshield. It helps the dispatcher give a closer estimate.

Cell 4 — Vehicles

Broken keys and ignition trouble

A key that snaps in a door or ignition can often be extracted in one piece, and a new key can be cut from the broken halves. If the ignition will not turn even with a good key, the cylinder may be worn and need repair or replacement.

Do not force a stuck ignition with pliers. It can damage the column and turn a modest repair into a much bigger one.

  • Ignition cylinder repair
  • Ignition change

Key fobs, remotes and push-button starts

Many newer cars use a proximity fob instead of a blade key. When a fob is lost, a new one has to be programmed to the car, and on some models the old fob can be removed from the car's memory at the same time, so it will no longer start the vehicle. Ask about that if your fob was stolen rather than lost.

If the fob still works but the buttons are unreliable, a battery change may be all it needs. If the car will not recognize any fob, the problem may be in the car itself, and the locksmith will say so before charging for new keys.

For motorcycles and scooters, bring the ignition key number if you have it. Many can be cut from a code without removing the lock.

Cell 7 — FAQ

Questions callers ask

Can a new key be made without the original?

In many cases, yes. The locksmith can decode the lock or use the VIN, then cut and program a new key on site.

Will opening my car set off the alarm?

It might. Have the remote or key fob details ready, and the alarm usually stops once the car is unlocked and started.

What does a car key cost?

The price list shows new vehicle keys and transponder programming starting at $100.00 plus the service call fee. Your exact price depends on the vehicle.
