Locked out of your house or flat

A home lockout usually starts with a door that closed behind you or keys locked inside with the deadbolt thrown. The locksmith first checks whether the lock can be picked or bypassed, which leaves the hardware working exactly as before. Older Oakland bungalows often have rim locks or simple knob sets that open quickly; newer builds and apartment doors tend to have deadbolts with tighter tolerances.

You will be asked to show ID and something linking you to the address. If your ID is inside, the locksmith can open the door and then check it with you standing in the doorway. Renters may also be asked for the landlord's details.

  • Knob and lever lockouts
  • Deadbolt lockouts
  • Sliding patio door lockouts
  • Garage side-door lockouts
  • Locked bedroom or bathroom doors

Lost keys and rekeying

If a key is lost or a former roommate still has one, rekeying is usually the least costly way to make the old keys useless. The locksmith changes the pins inside the cylinder so a new key works and the old one does not. The lock body, the finish and the door stay as they are.

Rekeying several doors to one key is common after moving in. Bring every lock into the plan at once, including the back door and the garage, so you end up with a single key that opens everything. See the coupons page for current rekey offers.

Deadbolts, strikes and worn hardware

A deadbolt that needs a shove to turn is often not a lock problem at all: the door has dropped, so the bolt drags on the strike plate. Adjusting the strike or the hinges fixes it in minutes and stops the key from snapping later. Where the bolt is genuinely worn, a replacement deadbolt is fitted to the existing holes when possible.

Short screws are another weak spot. Many strike plates are held by screws that only reach the trim. Longer screws into the stud make a kicked door far harder to force, and it is a cheap upgrade to ask for during any visit.

  • Strike plate realignment
  • Deadbolt replacement
  • Reinforced strike with long screws
  • Door viewer and chain fitting

After a break-in at home

Once the police have been called and you have a report number, a locksmith can make the door secure again. That might mean a new cylinder, a rekey, a replacement strike on a split jamb, or a temporary fix that lets you lock up for the night until a carpenter repairs the frame.

Keep the damaged parts and the invoice. Insurers often ask for both, and photos taken before the repair help with any claim.

Cell 7 — FAQ

Questions callers ask

How much does a house lockout cost?

The published price list shows lockouts starting at $19.00 plus the $29 service call fee. The final total depends on the lock and is confirmed on site before work starts.

Is rekeying cheaper than new locks?

Usually, yes. Rekeying keeps your existing locks and changes only the pins, while new locks add the cost of hardware.

Can a landlord's lock be changed?

Tenants should check their lease and speak to the landlord first. The locksmith will ask who is authorized to approve a lock change at a rental.
